Based on the Sydney Taylor award-winning book by Mari Lowe (see cover art at left), "Aviva vs. the Dybbuk," is a heartfelt tale of grief and community, seeking to answer the question of, "How do we get unstuck?"
Follow Aviva Jacobs, who, shortly after the death of her Abba (or father) discovers a Dybbuk haunting the Mikvah above which her and her mother live. Together with her best friend Kayla, Aviva investigates the Dybbuk, hoping to learn more about his purpose, and why he has decided to haunt the Mikvah.
Along the way, she encounters challenges with school, family, friends, and her life at the Mikvah, as the Dybbuk throws a wrench into everything she does! Meanwhile, on the sidelines, and in the background, strange and frightening events have been happening in the town of Beacon...
"Aviva vs. The Dybbuk," is a musical designed for Orthodox communities, and can easily be performed with a cast of all-female performers. The show is approximately 70 minutes long, with a family-friendly tone. The pit band consists of two instruments: Piano and Guitar, and can also be performed with rehearsal tracks if necessary.
Additionally, the piece features enactments of many Jewish traditions, including setting the stone on the grave of a loved one, playing machanayim in school, reaching Bas Mitzvah age, attending Friday Night shabbat service, and purifying at the Mikvah.
